One Direction Mania: Fans Take Over “Today” Show

U.K. boy band announces One Direction 3D movie

Directioners, the diehard loyal followers of the U.K. boy band phenomenon One Direction, descended on Rockefeller Plaza Tuesday as the band commemorated the release of their sophomore album, "Take Me Home," with a free, outdoor performance on the "Today" show.

A record-breaking number of screaming fans—some in a tearful frenzy—gathered to hear One Direction sing a handful of songs, including “What Makes you Beautiful,” “Live While We’re Young” and “Little Things.” The event was the biggest concert series ever hosted on the "Today" show, according to NBC’s Matt Lauer.

Fans started camping out Thursday, Time reported, and a "Today" show staffer tweeted yesterday that the line of fans extended from West 48th Street to 52nd Street. Some traveled from as far as Ohio and Maryland, according to the New York Post. Extra security was provided by the New York City Police Department in the form of barricades and officers scattered throughout the Plaza.

Not only did the band perform, but the guys also made a major announcement: A One Direction 3D movie is in the works with an anticipated August 2013 release. Better buy those tickets early.
