Orangutans Get Special Screening of Orangutan Movie

The film chronicles a Canadian woman's efforts to save the endangered apes

How do you know if an orangutan likes a movie? A producer of a documentary about the endangered orange apes will find out soon.

Orangutans on the Indonesian island of Borneo are getting a special movie screening in the middle of the rainforest — and the film stars their lookalikes.

"Born to be Wild 3D" chronicles the efforts one German-Canadian woman, Birute Galdikas, to rescue orangutans, which are endangered as the Indonesian jungles they call home vanish as the land is cleared.

The movie has already gotten the seal of approval of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who hopes it will raise the profile of orangutans' plight and inspire his countrymen to prevent their extinction.

Now the movie's producer, Drew Fellman, wants it to inspire the few remaining orangutans on Borneo, where the film was shot, too — and maybe express his gratitude for inspiring the movie.

"They worked pretty hard on it," Fellman told The Associated Press on Tuesday on his way to the site of the screening. "They came to be like members of the crew."

Only 50,000 orangutans remain in the wild, according to the AP.
