“Breaking Dawn” Breaks Box Office Records

Twi-hards line up for fourth movie in saga

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" took a bite at the box office this weekend, grossing $139.5 million domestically and $144 million overseas for a worldwide franchise best of $283.5 million.

The latest chapter in the vampire saga boasts the fifth-largest opening ever at the domestic box office and the second-best weekend opening for the franchise, behind the $142.8 million debut of 2009's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," according to MSNBC.The sequel, which features a long-awaited sex scene between Edward and Bella, has been panned by critics, but the many Twi-hards lining up to buy tickets easily made it No. 1 at the box office this weekend.

"Happy Feet Two" was second with $22 million.

"Breaking Dawn" still falls short of the $169 million record set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” last summer, Reuters reports.
