An official says three Opa-locka police officers have been suspended for giving Justin Bieber an unauthorized escort from the airport.
Opa-locka Police spokesman and Assistant City Manager David Chiverton said Friday that the officers were suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
Two officers, in their marked cruisers, escorted Bieber out of Opa-locka Executive Airport Monday night after his private plane landed there. The two officers who were driving were suspended, as well as a third officer, Chiverton said.
Bieber was free on bail Friday after an arrest on charges of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest. Miami Beach Police said Bieber smelled of alcohol when he was stopped after drag racing down a residential street early Thursday.
Police escorts from the Opa-locka Executive Airport are not uncommon, but they must follow procedure. Chiverton said the one that accompanied Bieber on Monday had not been authorized.
Internal affairs investigators are trying to find out how the escort was arranged.
Investigators are also seeking more information from the airport and the officers about where police escorted Bieber, according to Chiverton.
