LA Sheriff's Office Has Not Filed Away Natalie Wood Case

It seems an earlier statement that the investigation into the actress's mysterious death had gone cold was premature.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is in scramble mode after, apparently, announcing incorrectly that the recently-reopened investigation into the death of actress Natalie Wood was now a "cold case."

On Wednesday, Steve Whitmore, a spokesperson for the LASD, told Access Hollywood that the Wood investigation was being filed away without any significant updates. This announcement came just weeks after the case was rather mysteriously re-opened, and several of Wood's associates re-questioned.

Now, however, Whitmore is backpeddling on his comment, saying that the case is "open and they are working on it."

Wood's husband at the time of her death, Robert Wagner, was among the people questioned but denied once again that he was involved in any wrongdoing. The LASD confirmed that Wagner was not a suspect.

Wood's death has been one of Hollywood's most infamously unsolved mysteries. The actress died in 1981 after falling off a yacht and drowning while traveling with Wagner, actor Christopher Walken, and several friends.

Rumors of drugs, alcohol (Wood's blood alcohol level was .14 at the time of her death), and fights with Wagner and Walken fueled speculation about the true cause of her drowning.
