Former Miami Dolphins player Chad Johnson has been formally charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic battery Wednesday after his August arrest for allegedly head-butting his wife, prosecutors said.

The Broward State Attorney's Office filed the charge against Johnson on Wednesday. Johnson's arraignment was set for Thursday at 8:30 a.m., according to online court records. He was expected to file a written plea of not guilty and was not expected to be in court, prosecutors said.

The marriage between Johnson and Evelyn Lozada imploded on Aug. 11 after an argument between the two ended with Lozada being treated at a hospital for lacerations to her head.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson was released from jail Sunday after he was arrested at his home in Davie on a domestic violence charge, police said. Johnson, wearing a green T-shirt and sweatpants, did not speak to reporters. His attorney, Adam B. Swickle, said he had no comment.

According to Davie Police, Lozada found a receipt for condoms and confronted Johnson about it at dinner. The argument continued during their drive home, and when they arrived at their driveway, he allegedly head-butted her.

In a 911 call released by authorities, a neighbor told police that there was an incident involving a "high-profile person" and is heard telling Lozada to wipe the blood from her head. Lozada is heard saying that Johnson head-butted her, and the caller says Lozada will probably need stitches.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday night at his home in Davie and faces a domestic violence charge, police said. The raw video shows Johnson arriving at the jail.

However, Johnson told police she head-butted him. Lozada has since filed for divorce.

The charge is a first-degree misdemeanor pubishable by one year in jail, prosecutors said.

The confrontation came barely a month after Johnson married Lozada, who is on the reality TV show "Basketball Wives." The 34-year-old Johnson had been battling for a spot on the Miami Dolphins after a disappointing season with the New England Patriots in 2011.

The Dolphins released Johnson a day after his arrest.
