Versace Family Denies Mafia Affiliation

The murder of Gianni Versace, who was shot on the steps of his Miami home in July of 1997, has been the subject of much media speculation over the past ten years. But when rumors recently started circulating that his death was related to outstanding debts owed to the Calabrian mafia, the Versace family has been quick to defend his memory.

According to a family spokesperson, "the declarations from the informer are false and shameful," reports Vogue UK. Italian authories, however, are taking the allegations very seriously, and Giancarlo Capaldo of Rome's anti-mafia department claims an inquiry into Versace's relationship with the mob is under way.

We hope for Donatella's sake that the rumors are dispelled. It would certainly put a damper on Milan Fashion Week.
