Today, the Gap will give away 10,000 pairs of jeans to the first shoppers to use the new Facebook Places feature to check in at Gap stores. After that, it's 40 percent off.
One of several new interactive initiatives announced by the top social networking site, Facebook Places is essentially the same as Foursquare's location-based interactive community. Gap will be one of the first major businesses to give it a whirl, in conjunction with another new feature, Facebook Deals.
Facebook Deals provides an incentive for users to check in to their local retailers, by offering exclusive discounts and offers once they do--perhaps the first inklings of bridging the gap between the web and brick-and-mortar shopping experiences.
So, the way it plays out is this: beginning at 10 am tomorrow (when the store opens), users can go to the Gap and check in on their mobile device. They then show the employee their check-in on their phone, and employees will hand out free-jeans coupons on a first-come, first-served basis. After the 10,000 free pairs have gone, those checked in get a still-pretty-great discount of 40 percent off.
