South Street Seaport
Here's to making good things out of a bad situation: The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council is planning to bring events into the plentiful vacant retail space downtown by way of a series of "Swing Space" grants.
Kind landlords have donated their empty space to host a variety of cultural events. Through April 4, the 6,000-square-foot space at the South Street Seaport that was the former home of Liz Claiborne will house "Flight 18" by Eric Wallach, an interactive performance held inside a spaceship, while a vacated office on Wall Street is now home to Bobby Previte's 15-minute, one-on-one drum performances. It's stuff like Swing Space that gives new meaning to that old-school New York sense of yankee ingenuity.
