WASHINGTON - JANUARY 27: U.S. first lady Michelle Obama looks on before her husband U.S. President Barack Obama's speech to both houses of Congress during his first State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol on January 27, 2010 in Washington, DC. Since taking office a little over a year ago, Obama's approval ratings have dropped significantly according to recent polls. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
First Lady Michelle Obama shone in two-tone eggplant Isaac Mizrahi at her husband's State of the Union Address last night.
Mrs. Obama looked elegant, sporty and youthful with her new bob and a single strand of pearls accessorizing her jersey and taffeta cocktail frock. Although the infamous arms were covered in bracelet sleeves, her fitted bodice showed off her toned physique, with a simple band sash giving way to a slightly voluminous, loosely pleated ball skirt. The jersey was matched by the skirt's rich jewel-tone sheen and - wait for it - pockets! Brilliant.
What makes MObama such a fashion trailblazer, we think, is her ability to at once honor the distinguished and prim monochromatic First Lady look -- even in a shade of classically political purple -- without falling into the ranks of Easter Sunday skirt suits by Blass or de la Renta. We think Coco and her cohorts would be pleased.
