Power dressing: Sculpted shoulders are one of this fall's top trends.
Last week, various outlets (including this one) reported that Balmain was doing some hush-hush work on a new, lower-priced line. Turns out our hopes may have been all for naught.
Word that the notoriously expensive brand might have a lower-priced offshoot in the works was set off by a WWD interview with Balmain chief executive Alain Hivelin, who said that the label was "quietly" testing a collection called "Blue Label" for Fall/Winter. However a spokesperson for Balmain recently touched base with Vogue UK, saying that a lower priced line didn't exist, and that the line in question was likely "a capsule collection that was prepared for some Parisian retailers," that "the brand has decided not to repeat."
On the one hand, we're devastated that Balmain's signature brand of sexy apparel will remain completely out of our reach on a price level, but on the other we're pretty confused. WWD's a highly credible source, and the article clearly stated that this mythic "Blue Label" line would "soon" be tested, not "was already" tested. However, the Balmain spokesperson told Vogue UK that designer Christophe Decarnin wasn't involved, which certainly is a bummer. Overall, we're not getting our hopes up for anything at this rate.
