Rei Kawakubo Makes Surprise NYC Appearance to Promote Matt Groening Collaboration

Comme des Garçons' ever-elusive Rei Kawakubo made her first NYC appearance in six years, showing up at her New York store on Saturday to promote the Binky & Sheba PLAY collaboration with cartoon artist Matt Groening.

WWD reports that Kawakubo, who still stayed under the radar at the party, avoiding cameras and talking to just a few people with her husband, company CEO Adrian Joffe, donned sequined sneakers and signed T-shirts.

According to Joffe, Kawakubo wanted to check in with her staff and see the store, and the couple also spent the trip visiting the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met, and strolling Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

The collaboration of T-shirts and tote bags depict the characters of Groening's longtime, but lesser-known cartoon series, "Life in Hell", and the cartoonist told WWD he was "thrilled with how [Kawakubo] treated them almost like heiroglyphics."

As for the Simpsons, there seems to be some debate over whether Kawakubo might really break from habit and guest-voice on the show—according to the report, Groening seemed hopeful, while Joffe said “she doesn’t watch TV, never mind ‘The Simpsons.’”
