One to Watch: Crazy Caps by Noel Stewart

Maybe it's because we've been seeing so many of Kate Middleton's regal caps lately, but something about Noel Stewart's gorgeous concept head wear struck us as perfectly of-the-moment.

Stewart, whose fanciful creations have been worn by everyone from Beth Ditto to Britney Spears, honed his skills at the Royal College of Art after working with Stephen Jones at Christian Dior Couture. As one might expect of a Dior-veteran, the importance of theatricality is not lost on Noel, and each of his concept collections (three per season) reflect distinctly playful moods. One concept for spring 2011, dubbed "Plastic Pavilion," consists of lego-looking materials in bright, sporty colors.

We're pleased to see that hats are playing an increasingly important role on the runway, and that NYC sidewalks are getting crowded with wide-brimmed caps and chic vintage cloches. Of course, we're not suggesting that Ms. Middleton strap on Noel's "Coral Bay" head piece (which is literally designed to look like long lengths of coral gently swaying in the water) anytime soon, but maybe one of his more approachable designs, like a metallic tweed boater or crushed silk bucket hat, would do the trick.
