Basta's Effortlessly Cool, Reversible Swimwear

Shopping for swimsuits can turn into a nightmare of unflattering cuts and gaudy patterns. Fortunately, designers Samantha August and Emily Ford decided to introduce a little sophistication into the swim market with their collection Basta—the Italian word for "enough."

And in terms of fashion-forward swimwear, Basta does just that: exactly enough, combining sleek silhouettes with on-trend (but never flashy) details, like cool color-blocked one-pieces or bright bungee-strap accents.

"[I was] traveling for a year and finding a lack of great swimwear to surf and be active in that was still sophisticated and functional," August says of the brand's origins.

August and Ford divide and attack all aspects of design as a team. "We are a little bit yin and yang," says Ford. "We are very different but complement and balance each other. We start with inspiration boards [and] color boards and build upon that and wrestle a bit along the way."

But the results are well worth a little wrestling. Not only are their immaculately designed suits effortlessly cool, but—best of all—they're completely reversible.

"[We wanted] options to add individuality," says August. "We wear our suits mismatched, twisted or with only one piece reversed."

Reversibility also adds value, Ford points out. "While we don't try to compete with H&M's $10 suits, we like that we can offer more than one suit per purchase."
