Tucked away on the picturesque corner of Christopher and Gay streets, newly opened "A Man and a Woman" boutique seeks to bring a high-end shopping experience to members of both genders.
"More and more men -- especially in New York City -- care as much about fashion as women do, but they don't shop in the same stores," says owner Erin Crandall, who left her post as head buyer for Shopbop last year to pursue a longtime goal of opening her own shop.
Now living the dream, Crandall explains that she "always loved working in Bop" -- the storefront incarnation of Shopbop.com -- in Madison, Wisoconsin. According to Crandall, "You get to meet and talk to so many people but still be active and creative. Now, it gives me time to think about my business."
Through the years of working with different fashion brands, Crandall honed a refined sense of style and design, which she communicates through racks stocked with choice pieces by Jason Wu, Kim Ovitz, Rebecca Taylor and Haute Hippie. The overall vibe at AMAW is, like Crandall herself, elegant and effortless, with a single rack of understated eveningwear glittering from the back.
We spent a few minutes fawning over a silver tweed-lined jacket by Jason Wu ("He's the real deal," says Crandall) and had to stop ourselves from carrying a printed top by Tucker all the way to the register.
For the fellas, a freshly-built walnut fixture designed by carpenter Joncy Bennett is piled high with perfect knit scarves by Yigal Azrouel and denim by Simon Spurr. Visit Erin and her fuzzy white store dog/mascot, Lucas, at their Fashion's Night Out party tomorrow night and enjoy freshly shucked oysters, champagne, and truly top-notch shopping.
A Man and a Woman is located at 14 Christopher Street.
