Nordstrom Rack Opens Today in Union Square

Nordstrom makes its first foray into the city's retail scene today, when it opens an outpost of its lower-price offshoot, Rack, on Union Square South.

The off-price outpost of the regular department store is the first to enter Manhattan, a clear sign of the retail economy's slowly improving evolution in the face of a struggling economy.  The company has reportedly been scouting out a spot for a full-price NYC flagship for some time and continues to do so while Rack opens in the meantime.

The newest Rack -- the chain already operates 75 in 21 states -- scored some fantastic real estate in the form of former Virgin Megastore spot: It's right on the square and joins fellow bargain store Filene's Basement and DSW a few doors down.  You can bet we'll be staking out for the official opening, so stay tuned for pics from the ground.

Nordstrom Rack opens tomorrow at One Union Square South.
