Considering the diplomatic machinery churning in the background of the State Dinner in honor of China's President Hu Jintao -- not to mention the event's guest list, which included Anna Wintour and Vera Wang -- it was fair to say that a fair amount of eyes would be on whatever dress Michelle Obama chose for the occasion.

Fortunately for high-fashion fans, the First Lady went bold, opting for a deep red gown from Alexander McQueen's resort collection that featured a magnified floral printed on silk organza. The dress was designed by Sarah Burton, McQueen's protege and newly-installed creative director at the brand, but seemed a nod to the late designer himself, who passed away nearly a year ago in February.
