Banana Republic is making way for hip Canadian retailer Aritzia at 524 Broadway, marking the store's New York debut.
While not its first US store--Aritzia has several shops on the West Coast, Chicago and Short Hills, NJ--the Soho outpost joins similar mid-range, slightly trendy cohorts from overseas like Uniqlo, Topshop, Mango, Zara and All Saints. The genre is slowly creeping in on all-American standbys like Aritzia's new next-door neighbor, the Gap and monoliths like Hollister and American Eagle, perhaps because they present more variety than the requisite preppy jeans-and-rugby-shirt uniforms of similar price points.
