Christian Louboutin Expands into Beauty

After spending the past year celebrating his 20th anniversary -- and vigorously arguing his right to trademark those signature red soles -- it looks like Christian Louboutin is eyeing expansion into new categories.

According to WWD, the designer is set to launch a new beauty collection, Christian Louboutin Beauté, sometime in 2013. While the designer has been secretive about what particular products he's looking to bring to market -- perfume, cosmetics, etc -- the designer indicated to WWD that the collection would be "very constructed, quite different and unexpected." What's more, it seems he's reaching pretty far back for his inspiration:

Asked to name a beauty icon past or present that he finds inspiring, Louboutin cited one from 3,300 years ago: Nefertiti, whose painted limestone bust, now housed at the Neues Museum in Berlin, captivates the designer.

"It’s the most beautiful thing. I stayed like an hour just looking at the bust,” he enthused. “It’s a perfect beauty and the makeup is quite perfect."

The timing of the announcement certainly couldn't be better, considering the designer is just coming off a slew of celebrations around his 20th anniversary in the business, a moment celebrated with an exclusive shoe collection and a collaboration with Disney to create a new slipper for Cinderella, among other things.
