Food and fashion, the most succinct summary of our guilty pleasures, haven't always been known to mix. Leave it to Babycakes, the bastion of hipster vegan cool in the Lower East Side, to raise the bar. New uniforms just arrived, designed by Shana Tabor of In God We Trust according to Babycakes owner, Erin McKenna, on her blog.
McKenna has commissioned Built by Wendy designer, Wendy Mullins, in the past and now it seems that Tabor has lent her skills. From what we can tell, they look right on par with the usual bakery-meets-old-school-diner vibe but the mini bow ties and peter pan collars appear very much representative of the In God We Trust aesthetic. A bit of inspiration was also pulled from Phoebe Cates and Jennifer Jason Leigh's uniforms while slinging pizzas in the 1980's cult film, Fast Times at Ridgemount High.
McKenna's account of the design process is rather hilarious: "In God We Trust employees judged the uniform's wear-ability by simulating bakery tasks like intense whisking, extreme flour lifting and turbo frosting." We're hoping tasting was invloved somewhere in this process too.
