The Day Before, airing September 9 on the Sundance Channel, dives inside the final 48 hours before Fendi, Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel and Jean Paul Gaultier (haute couture) shows- giving us a fascinating peek into the Project Runway-esque blood, sweat and tears of the big guns.
With admirable candor, the four designers expose themselves to voyeurs like us and reveal the truth behind the suspense, exactitude and insanity that go down in the eleventh hour of a sublime creative vision. Fendi's overtired staff putting on an impromptu show for Karl Lagerfeld, the Proenza Schouler boys' touchy-feely runway send-offs and Sonia Rykiel's madcap birthday present-slash-fashion retrospective are a hoot, but what really had us were the riveting tick-tock moments at the intense, yet surprisingly organized, Jean Paul Gaultier atelier. Only two words can adequately describe it: crocodile crochet.
If embroidery can leave you entranced or you're just plain caught up in all the clothes, The Day Before looks to be a total treat.
