It's Official: MAC to Sponsor Show Venue

It's official:  MAC Cosmetics will move its significant fashion week sponsorship to Milk Studios for the Fall 2009 shows, bringing a crew of top designers with it.

This is serious business, since the brand will be taking not only its deep pockets but also names like Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Peter Som, Threeasfour, Vena Cava, Band of Outsiders, Adam Lippes, Altuzarra, Barbara Tfank, Costello Tagliapietra, Erin Fetherston, Pamela Love, Preen and Temperley London along with it.  MAC has also agreed (in a pretty stunning turn) to foot the bill for designers' shows, presenting an enticing $26-$50K incentive to think outside the tents.  Maybelline New York will replace MAC at the tents through Fall 2010, when IMG relocates to the potential Siberia of Lincoln Center.

To be fully honest, we've got a gossip problem in our office, so we couldn't help but wonder about the motives behind MAC's decision to move its sponsorship to a new venue. Granted, the reasoning and across-the-board denial of any strife with IMG do kind of ring true, with WWD citing MAC's motivation to create "new ways of presenting and showing collections in a unique environment, fostering the evolution of fashion week in New York.”

But on the other hand, we can't help thinking about that Town Hall meeting the fashion community hosted, and there's also the not-insignificant matter of Fashion Week moving to the slightly-less-glamorous location of Lincoln Center next year. We're sensing some mutiny in the ranks here.
