Filene's Basement to Close 6th Avenue Location

Fans of big discount shopping in Manhattan will have one less spot to visit come 2010, as Filene's has announced it will be unable to renew its lease on Sixth Avenue, which ends March 31.

The dicount chain has already had a tough year -- it filed for Chapter 11 earlier this year, and the founder of its new owner, Syms, died last month -- and the closing, originally reported by Crain's, will apparently affect 75 employees. A spokeswoman for Syms told Crain's that the company is "actively pursuing an even better site," but we'd wager that news of a new opening won't be anytime soon.

In better news, brides who were waiting with baited breath for Filene's annual Running-of-the-Brides event will still be able to sprint their way to discounted wedding dresses at Filene's other Manhattan outpost in Union Square on February 5, 2010.
