The “Easy A” Trailer Inspires Cautious Optimism

Emma Stone, the current movie fan crush of the month, stars in "Easy A," an upcoming teen comedy due out this fall, and the trailer offers both hope and concern.

"Easy A" tells the story of young Olive Penderghast, an anonymous high school student, who agrees to help out a friend by pretending to have very loud sex with him during a house party. Soon every nerd in school is lining up to pay her for similar "service."

But she quickly develops a reputation as a four-star roundheel, despite still being a virgin, drawing the scorn of her school's Christian contingent who suggests she wear a scarlet A.

The format of the trailer, with Stone talking into her webcam and narrating the plot, takes a lot of the edge off the comedy, and makes the thing feel a bit cheesy. Hopefully this was a device used just for the trailer.

If this film starred almost any other young actress, we probably wouldn't give it a second look, but Stone has been so good in "Superbad," "Zombieland," and even the admittedly flawed "Paper Man," that this might actually be worthwhile.

Embiggening our hopes is a strong supporting cast, with Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson playing Olive's parents, and Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow as teachers at her school.

We've had our eye on this for a while now and we're gonna follow it through to its Sept. 17 release if it kills us.
