Steve Carell & Keira Knightley Circling Apocalypse RomCom

With his "Office" career all but over Steve Carell is scrambling for work. Fortunately, he's found some folks who think he may have a future as a movie star.

Carell is in talks to co-star alongside Keira Knightley in "A Friend for the End of the World," reports Deadline. The film will be the directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria, best known for her script for "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist."

"A Friend" is set in a time when humanity is facing the prospect of being wiped out by an oncoming asteroid. Carell's character gets left in the lurch by his panicky wife who flees for who knows where...

Luckily, Carell's character soon thereafter hears from his high school sweetheart, who wants to spend the end of the world with him. So he and his sexy neighbor, Knightley, head off on a road trip to find her. Guess who falls in love - go on, guess.

In the meantime, Carell's last "Office" farewell airs April 21, and his film "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is out later this summer, while Knightley's "Last Night," co-starring Sam Worthington, opens at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month before going into limited release May 6.
