Ramis: “There Will Be A Third Ghostbusters Movie”

You know, for a movie franchise that hasn’t graced screens in over 21 years, the folks in charge of making “Ghostbusters 3” sure know how to make a public fuss. First, Ivan Reitman was confirmed to direct. Then word came that Reitman might be out and Marc Webb was going to be hired to take his place. Then Bill Murray said he’d join, but only if his character got killed off. Then Murray said the movie was myth and would never happen. Then Reitman was back in for good. THEN A GHOST CAME AND STOLE THE SCRIPT! Now original star and writer Harold Ramis says the movie WILL happen. Kinda. From an interview with ABC via FilmShaft:

“Well, there’s been a lot of talk about a third Ghostbusters film, which has now become real. It’s… I can say with some certainty that there will be a third movie. It won’t be out until Christmas 2012, but the work is going on now.”

Let’s parse this quote. Notice the use of “some certainty.” There’s no such thing as some certainty. Either something is certain, or it’s not. If it only has some certainty, then it has NO certainty. So let’s not assume Ramis’ word is gospel here.

I think Ramis is saying this for two reasons. First off, I think he’s doing it just so Bill Murray will finally relent and come aboard. Is it me, or is Bill Murray perhaps the world’s most annoying person to deal with? His brilliance as a performer aside, wouldn’t you rather have your eyeballs plucked out than try and get Bill Murray to be agreeable?

Secondly, I think all this odd talk over the movie is something its makers enjoy. I’ll be honest, I have no clue why anyone would want a third Ghostbusters movie. And I say that as one of the five people who LIKED “Ghostbusters 2.” I think the makers of this movie assume that, if there’s enough turbulence during production, that will convince you to want this movie more than you actually do. “What’s that? A third Ghostbusters? Well, that’s dumb. They shouldn’t make it. What’s that? They’re not making it? What’s that? They’re making it, but without Bill Murray? Or Ivan Reitman? Well, when are they going to MAKE this stupid thing already! Jeez, I want my Ghostbusters 3! Wait. Do I?” You see how this can mess with your brain?

Anyway, it sounds like this movie is happening, until a report pops up next week that says it’s not. It’s almost as if this project is, dare I say, HAUNTED? Huh? Huh?

Oh, forget it.
