Michelle Monaghan Takes Aim at Gerard Butler's “Machine Gun Preacher”

With a potentially huge, career-making year ahead of her, Michelle Monaghan has hitched her wagon to Gerard Butler's sputtering, dying star in a film about an ex-biker turned preacher turned orphan rescuer.

Monaghan will star as opposite Butler in "Machine Gun Preacher," based on the true story of Sam Childers, who cleaned up his act after years in a biker gang to become a man of the cloth before pouring his energy into rescuing war orphans in Sudan.

The script by Jason Keller is based on Childer's memoir, "Another Man's War: The True Story of One Man's Battle to Save Children in the Sudan" and the film will be directed by Mark Forster ("Monster's Ball," "Stranger Than Fiction").

Monaghan co-stars with Benicio del Toro in Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," which is due out later summer and will then be seen playing Robert Downey Jr's wife in "Due Date," a road comedy costarring Zach Galifianakis.

Next year she'll appear in "Source Code," the highly anticipated sophomore effort from wirter-director Duncan Jones, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga nd Jeffrreey Wright.

Monaghan's a good actress with great comic chops, in addition to being super cute. She's got three high-profile projects poised to finally get her some notice at an age, 34, when most actresses have already been spit out by the Hollywood machine.

So why on Earth is this woman playing second banana to Butler? This guy's cranked out more dogs than Hebrew National in the past five years.
