Apocalypse Watch: Baz Luhrman's Considering "Gatsby" in 3D

More than anything, the idea of "The Great Gatsby" in 3D just makes us sad.

Baz Luhrman recently "workshopped" "Gatsby in 3D (whatever that means--don't know about you, but we do everything in 3D), according to Forbes, who caught up with the director at the Consumer Electronics Show.

We've enjoyed Luhrman's unique sensibilities and vision in the past, even his misses are at least interesting, and the cast he's allegedly assembled--Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan--is great, but for the life of us we can't figure why you'd film a story like "Gatsby" in 3D.

This isn't a simple matter of cranky old man, get offa my lawn Luddtisim. The fact is that as awesome as the technology has gotten, it's still kind of a drag, especially for those of us who wear glasses.

There's no doubt that at some point in the not too distant future, 3D will look as good and "real" as the world around us, without the benefit of a giant pair of glasses, but we're not there yet.

If nothing else, "Inception" reminded us of just how immersive, gorgeous and jaw-dropping a film can be in 2D. Surely a man of Luhrman's talents can give us a great "Gatsby" without 3D.
