Angelina Jolie Prepping Serbian Love Story for Big Screen Directorial Debut

Having finished work on "The Tourist," her upcoming film in which she stars opposite Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie is now gearing up to make her directorial debut with a film set in the former Yugoslavia.

The movie will tell the story of “a couple who meet on the eve of the war and the effect it has on their relationship.”

"The film is a love story, not a political statement," Jolie said in a statement released via the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for which she is a goodwill ambassador. "I would like to involve as many local people as possible and learn as much as I can," Jolie said.

GK films confirmed Tuesday that Jolie wrote the film's screeenplay and will direct it. Jolie is also producing the film with "Tourist" collaborators Graham King and Tim Headington, the British company wrote on its blog.

Jolie and her manfriend Brad Pitt visited Bosnia in April and she was there again over the weekend to discuss helping refugees still waiting to return home. She is scheduled to go back in September to begin filming, according to Filmofilia.

Jolie's last film, "Salt," was an overlooked spy thriller, a genre she'll revisit opposite Depp in "The Tourist," from director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ("The Lives of Others"). It comes out Dec. 10.
