Watch: Merrill Garbus Perform “Gangsta” on Fallon

Merrill Garbus' breakthrough 2011 album w h o k i l l showcased a once-in-a-generation voice, and her immense creativity in using such a versatile instrument - -for rhythm, melody, and harmony, often all at once.

But her virtuosic talents truly flourish in a live setting, and last night on Fallon she performed a gleefully weird take of standout "Gangsta."

The climax is a killer verse by Black Thought; it's rare for a song to evolve and improve on late-night television, except when the Roots are involved. They're the best in the business by a long way, and you won't see many live TV performances as loose and inspired as this.
