Monday, Dec. 24 Wyatt Cenac, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Che, Claudia Cogan,Ted Leo (DJ Set), Danny Glover (DJ Set) at Littlefield, $5
If your family is driving your crazy on the night before Christmas, then you should ditch out and drop by this show to lift your spirits. Assuming she's not just ranting about how the holidays are all about capitalism or whatever then Janeane Garofalo should be able to fill you with warm acerbic cheer, and Ted Leo should be held you dance your angst away. Also, Wyatt Cenac recently left The Daily Show to focus on stand-up, and he would appreciate if you dropped by to support him in this time of transition.
This is a strangely appropriate holiday show. Action Bronson is known for rapping extensively about food, which you might be in the mood for after your holiday feast. He also raps about pretending to be a pimp-superhero-urban-avenger type in a manner that brings to mind a kid on Christmas morning freaking out over his toys. If you want to try to extend the holiday spirit for a few more days, hanging out with this joyful man-child should do it.
Thursday, Dec. 27-Saturday, Dec. 29, My Morning Jacket at The Capitol Theatre, $56
My Morning Jacket's four-hour New Year's Eve set at the end of 2008 is the stuff of local legend. These shows might not be quite as epic, but they will no doubt still be filled the cosmic guitar spasms and echo soul vocals that these arena gods made their name with. Though it will be too late in the game for one of their Christmas covers, they might still throw in a Kool And The Gang cover to keep things festive.
