The Decemberists Map a 2011 Tour

Gather round all you swashbucklers and scallywags. All you braggarts and charlatans sit down and keep quiet because those fearless frontiersmen (and women) known as The Decemberists have an announcement to make.

The balladeers lead by the ambitious storytelling of Colin Meloy have announced a North American tour in support of their upcoming release The King Is Dead which is due to hit stores January 18 courtesy of Capitol Records. The Decemberists’ tour kicks off on January 25 at New York’s recently renovated Beacon Theatre which is a perfectly ornate setting for their epic tales and lush compositions. The undeniably cute, Baltimore based duo Wye Oak will open this show along with about half of the North American tour dates.

The tour takes them through the Northeast into Canada before cutting back through the Midwest en route to the West Coast where they will wrap up the tour in their hometown of Portland, Oregon on February 19. Presale tickets for all the shows are on sale now while the public on sale is scheduled for Friday, November 19 at 10am.

The King Is Dead is the sixth full-length record from The Decembrists in less than a decade and is the follow up to the prolific 2009 album The Hazards of Love. On the new album, the band enlisted the help of Gillian Welch on seven tracks and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on a few others. Welch will also sit in with the band when they play their new single “Down by the Water” live on TBS’ “Conan” on Thursday, November 18.
