Rene Lopez—who’s called boogaloo "the first Nuyorican music"--follows up his 2009 debut People Are Just People with the album ELS, out this summer on Nat Geo Music.

The acronym stands for Electric Latin Soul, a term the Bronx native coined to describe his particular blend of Latin soul and boogaloo with rock, hip-hop, and R&B—he worked with producers behind the music of Bebel Gilberto, the Beastie Boys and Jenny Lewis, which should tip you off to the vast terrain of musical influences on the album.

Lopez also has plenty of old-school soul—a la Wilson Pickett—in his DNA, along with the funk of Sly and the Family Stone and Prince.

He’ll preview the material at his East Village home base, NUBLU, this Thursday, May 19, and next Thursday, May 26, which he’s also calling a celebration of his dual American/Puerto-Rican identity.
