MpFree: James Vincent McMorrow’s ‘If I Had a Boat’ (@ LPR Thurs.)

    NYC, meet James Vincent McMorrow.

He released his debut album Early in the Morning—recorded over half a year when he holed himself up in a cottage by the sea—in his native Ireland to critical frothing earlier this year (it’s due in the U.S. in January, but a self-titled four-track EP landed on iTunes earlier this week). He’s got one of the most unusual voices we’ve heard in a while (think Ray Lamontagne or Rocco DeLuca) and plies it at (Le) Poisson Rouge tonight, in an early set opening for (equally Irish) new waveish rockers Bell X1. Grab the track If I Had a Boat below; then come by the show (he goes on at 7:45) so you can say you saw him when.
