MpFree Wednesday: Company of Thieves, “Modern Waste”

Who: Company of Thieves, the genre-spanning outfit that blipped onto the pop-cult radar a couple of years ago when their infectious single “Oscar Wilde” began getting heavy airplay on indie stations in their homebase of Chicago and beyond.

That the band put on a raucous live show, kinetic frontwoman Genevieve Schatz mopping the stage with her power vocals (she’s been described as a cross between Feist and Etta James; seems incongruous, but it works), just grew the buzz further.

Opening slots for the likes of OK GO and the Hold Steady followed, as did a stint on
Daryl Hall’s on show “Live From Daryl’s House.” On the heels of releasing their sophomore album Running From A Gamble a couple of weeks ago, Company of Thieves will be performing at Bowery Ballroom on June 13. Check out the video below for an acoustic version of the album track "Death of Communication," shot on Chicago's Ferris wheel with Schatz and guitarist Marc Walloch.
