Lia Ices—the singer/songwriter/pianist whose stage name is cribbed from a Windsor Terrace gelato shop—is playing a release show for her new album, Grown Unknown (Jagjaguwar Records), tonight at Joe’s Pub.
It’s the first new material from the ethereal Ices, who splits her time between Brooklyn and Vermont, since her 2008 debut, the pretty-if-far-more-homegrown album Necima. The new disc is much more slick, and showcases the erstwhile mysterious Ices front and center, with frankly gorgeous and ultra-supple pipes. Plus, we can never get enough orchestral sweepiness, cello, or handclaps. Ices belongs in any playlist that features My Brightest Diamond, Joanna Newsom or even Kate Bush.
