Who: The tune Mad Tom of Bedlam dates to the early 1600s—Shakespeare drops a reference to it in King Lear, even—but NYC-based Charlene Kaye & the Brilliant Eyes jazz it up on their debut EP, taking roots-folkie Jolie Holland’s version as their backbone; the result is something that’s a little bit rockabilly and a little bit Western swing. (A music video partially set in Coney Island helps amp up the retro vibe.) Fun fact: Kaye (who showed up at the Grammys on Sunday with frequent collaborator Darren Criss, of Glee fame) has also covered Justin Bieber’s song Baby. Talk about both ends of the spectrum. The band plays a show at Gowanus, Brooklyn venue Littlefield on March 5.
