Miss J on Judging: “Sometimes You've Got to Break a Girl Down”

In the world of reality TV judges, J. Alexander (a.k.a “Miss J”) of "America's Next Top Model" fame is known as one of the most merciless -- but he stood by his brutally honest critiques of contestants on the popular reality TV show during his book signing in Harlem last night.

“Sometimes you've got to break a girl down in order to build her back up,” Miss J said last night during a signing for his tome "Follow the Model" at the Hue-man Bookstore and Cafe in Harlem.

“Be yourself and always be comfortable in what you wear, regardless of trends and styles,” he said. “Most importantly, always be honest to yourself and others.”

Miss J -- whose conservative black pullover was a far cry from the dresses, cheerleader outfits and nurses uniforms he has sported on TV -- revealed he intended to write a memoir but the project evolved into a full-fledged book that delved into his Bronx upbringing and his entry into the world of fashion and modeling.

“Writing has become my emotional therapy,” he said. “I could wake up, start writing and not stop until three or four in the morning. You start to write and then all of a sudden emotions start popping up.”
