Elle Mag Editor on the Trouble With Finding Music's “It” Girl

Elle magazine editor in chief Roberta Myers, feting the fashion publication's long-running Women in Music issue during an exclusive party at the Highline Ballroom last night, said selecting music's next "It" girl is no easy task.

“The most difficult part is not being able to honor somebody multiple times," said Myers, who invited a select group of celebrities, designers, musicians and tastemakers last night for performances by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Kelis, alternative rock band The Like and beats courtesy of iconic New York City DJ Justine D.

"We had Lady Gaga on the cover in the past so we can’t do it again," Myers continued, "but she’s still very much talked about for her fashion."

Someone who has been on Elle's cover twice is Christina Aguilera, who was celebrating the release of her album "Bionic" just a few blocks away at Avenue.

“Christina was one of my first covers, and I believe that it was hers that really started our whole celebrity move with the covers. It did really well.”

The festivities of the night brought out Cassie, Nanna Øland Fabricius of Oh Land, Catherine Malandrino, Jordana Spiro, Pixie Lott, Matisse, "The City" starlet Whitney Port, Olivia Palermo, Roxy Olin and quite a few more. You know that you’re at the right party when there are several MTV reality shows shooting inside.

The soiree was specifically to launch their July issue of the Women in Music series, which features cover girl Rihanna, VV Brown, La Roux, Ke$ha, Alicia Keys, Paramore’s Hailey Williams, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kelis, The Like and Christina Aguilera.

After our chat with Roberta, the media maven jumped on stage to introduce a special surprise performance by the one and only Patti LaBelle. The soul sensation blew the trendy crowd away with the blazing rendition of her hit “Lady Marmalade.” The fun didn’t stop there for attendees, already feeling great after a couple hours of the Belvedere-sponsored bar, Kelis closed down the stage with a sampling of her new album “Fleshtone” and her hit, the crowd pleasing “Milkshake.”
