Publishing collective Mischief & Mayhem brought together bookworms and burlesque dancers at Room Service in the Flatiron District last night during their launch party.
"We're looking for sustainability," co-founder and author D.W. Gibson told Niteside Tuesday evening. "We're not looking to rule the universe."
The newly minted imprint, which is part of OR, is the brainchild of author Gibson and his pals Choire Sicha of the Awl, Lisa Dierbeck, Josh Furst and Dale Peck. With its modest -- but modern -- approach in mind, M&M seeks to do things differently.
“We’re past the point of panicking about the future of publishing," Gibson said. "We see possibility for publishing in the future by cutting back unnecessary overhead [and] by reinstating the editorial process.”
They are also embracing a green scheme: no copies printed until they're purchased.
“All the money we make goes into sustaining what we’re doing,” Gibson said.
Not looking to make a hefty profit, Gibson said the collective hopes it will eliminate some barriers to entry for authors who wouldn't be published by more conventional publishing houses.
“There’s a lot of exciting writers who are increasingly disgruntled with their mainstream publishing experience," he said.
The collective's debut release -- Lisa Dierbeck's "The Autobiography of Jenny X" -- will be out Oct. 15.
“There is something that feels rebellious about what we’re doing. We hope [it becomes] the norm,” Gibson said.
