National Eating Disorder Awareness Week Kicks Off with PSA

    If you happened to be in Times Square during Fashion Week, you may have caught this PSA from the National Eating Disorders Association running on one of the giant video screens. 

    Titled "Do You Think I'm Fat?," the PSA is a pointed remark about the fashion industry's influence on young girls' body images, according to NEDA's media release.

    The PSA features young children directly asking "Do you think I'm fat?" to the camera.

    NEDA president Lynn Grefe said the organization purposely chose to run the PSA during Fashion Week, stating that the fashion industry was "known for significant pressures for models to be skinny in order to keep their careers," according to a media release. 

    "We invite a public dialogue on this, because people are literally dying," Grefe said in the release. 

     

    The PSA ran in the days leading up to National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which kicked off February 20th.
     
    According to NEDA, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males in the U.S. are battling bulimia and anorexia, and 15 million more are struggling with binge-eating disorder.
