Seniors looking for activities to do outdoors with like-minded peers can still take advantage of the CityParks Seniors Fitness program, which offers free tennis, yoga, and fitness walking in parks across the five boroughs.
New Yorkers 60 and over are welcome to show up at any of the parks listed below to participate in the activities, says organizer City Parks Foundation.
"CityParks Seniors Fitness has served over 3,400 participants since it began in 2006, and aims to keep neighborhood parks a great place for community activity," said City Parks. "The program encourages New Yorkers to maximize the health benefits of staying active at all ages.
"Even in moderate amounts, exercise can help participants feel better, maintain or lose weight, reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and minimize the symptoms of arthritis," said City Parks.
Richard Hill, 87, and Erma Hill, 86, of Queens say they've been hitting the tennis courts at Flushing Meadows Corona Park at least twice a week to practice their serves, work on their volley skills and socialize with friends.
The couple met while students at the George Washington High School in Manhattan, and have been playing tennis since they were both 18.
"There is no excuse for seniors not being able to get active with the free program City Parks Foundation offers," said Erma. "Over 35 years ago, I was diagnosed with leukemia and given six months to live. Now I'm on the tennis court multiple times a week, thanks to our tennis classes. The more you stay active, the more you can do."
The program started in 2006, and has served over 3,400 New Yorkers. City Parks Foundation is a nonprofit organization deficated to presenting free arts, sports and education programs in over 750 of the city's parks.
