Thousands of men and women are expected to take part in the 10th annual Avon walk – 39.3 miles – while raising funds and awareness about breast cancer.
In 2010, the public charity raised over $9.4 million. The 3,900 participants, including 420 breast cancer survivors, were from 46 states and the UK, Mexico, Canada and Bermuda.
Participants can choose between walking a marathon, 26.2 miles or a marathon and a half, 39.3 miles, over a weekend. Walkers must raise a minimum of $1,800 for the cause.
An opening ceremony at the Hudson River Park’s Pier 84 will kick of the eighth of nine walks in the 2011 Avon walk series.
After a full day of walking on Saturday, participants will spend the night at the “Wellness Village” at Randall’s Island.
On Sunday, walkers will complete the final 13.1-mile leg.
Reese Witherspoon and Avon CEO Andrea Jung will be at the closing celebrations at Pier 84.
