SHAKEN, STIRRED: We thought last year’s Manhattan Cocktail Classic Gala—a night of elegant retro revelry opening a multi-day conference on the art and science of the cocktail—was a big affair. This year, the event takes over the entire space of the New York Library at 42nd and 5th, with different rooms offering different experiences: More than 100 mixologists from all over will pour specially-created cocktails at various stations throughout the library, as be-top-hatted patrons sample eats prepared by the likes of Mario Batali thrill to performances from hot jazz and ragtime bands, sword swallowers and much more. Black tie optional. 9PM.

HOLD PLEASE: Brooklyn-based band The Hold Steady bring their swelling rock riffs and everyman tales of love and struggle and woe to the first installment of WNYC’s Soundcheck Late Night series to be hosted in the new(ish) Greene Space in Tribeca. Doors open at 9:30, the quintet rocks at 10PM.

LIP SERVICE: Photographer/designer Michael Angelo (yes) snapped 60 different men and women--Dita Von Teese, Susan Sarandon and the like--wearing red lipstick for his exhibition The Lipstick Portraits (on now through May 23 at 401 Projects), a commentary on beauty and empowerment. Angelo comes to the Soho Apple Store with a special slideshow to discuss the process behind the project, including the software tools he used (Aperture, Photoshop) in what’s sure to be a seminar as dazzling as it is instructive. 6:30PM.
