Big Night

THE PERFECT DISH: Screening out of competition at the New York Food Film Festival is Stanley Tucci and Campbell Scott’s bittersweet classic Big Night (1996), about a restaurant fighting to stay open. It feels especially timely in these days of endless restaurant closings and features one of best final scenes ever committed to film. In our humble opinion. Also: Timpano will be served. Water Taxi Beach at South Street Seaport, 8:45PM.

WHICH WAY OUT? This American Life host and certified hipster objet de crush Ira Glass talks recession with NPR’s Adam Davidson and Alex Blumberg. The event’s title says it all: “How Did We Get Here and Where Are We Going?” P.S. 107, Park Slope, 7:30PM.

SHAKEN, STIRRING: Possibly, you could once have classified Portland’s Pink Martini as “lounge music.” But the group’s insistence on hopping from musical genre to musical genre –some Latin rhythms here, some Django-spiced French crooning there, and look! A big band! – keeps them fresh and us fascinated. Carnegie Hall, 8PM.
