The Underground Big Apple Jazz Festival kicks off June 26.

As any jazz-loving New Yorker will tell you, the best stuff isn’t at the Vanguard or the Blue Note or any of those other places that charge an extravagant cover and $12 for a Coke. Instead, you’ll find it at the hole-in-the-wall joints, the out-of-the-way restaurants, places – from pool halls to tea rooms to barbershops – that at first blush, really don’t seem like the perfect placce to bust out an upright bass or a washboard.

From June 26 to July 4th, the First Underground Big Apple Jazz Festival aims to invite you into these quasi-hidden haunts. A $30.00 Festival Pass will get you into 125 (!!) performances (Dixieland, ragtime, cool jazz, you name it) by 400 musicians at more than two dozen bars, restaurants and clubs all over the city.

For more information and ticketing, head to bigapplejazz.com.

          Um, No: Tinsley Mortimer

Always taking style to the next level, socialite Tinsley Mortimer took the alarming trend of frothy, flowery embellishments and added some extra tiers. The result, alas, is more cake than fashion.
