New York is honoring anti-apartheid activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday today, with a star studded concert planned for later tonight.

Radio City Music Hall will play host to celebrants, including pop-music royalty like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin. Whoopi Goldberg will host the event, and other the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Mandela is not expected to attend.

The name of the concert is Mandela Day. It's about "creating a movement for positive change and establishing one day to reflect upon, celebrate and make manifest the values that guide Nelson Mandela," said Tim Massey, the international director of Mandela's AIDS awareness charity, 46664, in a statement.

Proceeds from the concert will go to 46664, which takes its name from Mandela's ID number when he was a political prisoner.
