Hip Hotels Continue to Open Even as Economy Sours

Smyth, Cooper Square set debut dates

The Cooper Square Hotel is among the hip new hotels set to open soon in Manhattan.

Although New York City 's luxury hotels are only just starting to feel the pressure of a deflating economy, several new properties are planning top open their doors soon.

First up, the Cooper Square Hotel will open next week with walls of windows, steam showers and custom furniture. Promotional rates are now set at of $325 to $450 per night.

Thompson Hotels, which already operates 60 Thompson, Gild Hall and other NYC properties, will open its Smyth Tribeca on January 6.

While the introductory rates at the Smyth start at $205, they climb quickly to $2,500 a night for the luxury penthouse, which comes with its own 800-square foot patio.

Other hotels opening soon in Manhattan include The Mark, The Chatwal, the Dream Downtown, the Vu, The Standard and The Pierre.

Even across the river, Hoboken 's getting its first luxury hotel next year. The W Hoboken Hotel & Residences is on schedule to open on the waterfront in April complete with a Bliss spa and The Champagne Room.
