Social Media Editor
NBC 4 New York is looking for an experienced journalist to lead our social media efforts. The full-time social news editor will oversee, implement and refine our station’s social media strategy, leading the team effort of NBC 4 New York, the flagship station of NBC’s Owned Television Stations. The editor will start conversations on social platforms, solicit and verify photos, videos and news tips from the community, coach reporters and editors on best practices, and move content and conversations between broadcast and digital platforms.
Social Media Editor Key Responsibilities:
* Innovate new and creative ways to use social media platforms to tell stories and have a dialogue with
our viewers/readers.
* Start and moderate conversations in the online community
* Work with the wider digital and broadcast teams to ensure social platforms are updated with the latest information as news breaks and stories develop
* Solicit, find and verify photos, videos and new stories on social media platforms
* Work with our reporters and editors to develop strategies to use social media as a reporting tool and distribution channel.
* Work with the NBCUniversal Information Security team to insure that all social media accounts are secure and in compliance with best practices for security
* Collect, monitor and distribute social media metrics – developing best practices and action items from data
* Package user-generated photos and videos online in ways that are journalistically solid
Basic Qualifications:
* Minimum 5 years experience as an editor, writer or producer at a major news organization or blog that creates content under tight deadlines
* Bachelor’s degree, journalism, political science or English preferred
* A demonstrable passion for social media platform
Desired Requirements:
* Exceptional communication skills
* Knowledge of digital media technology, particularly social media networks
* Proven journalism skills: strong storytelling; good news judgment
* Must have the desire to work in a creative, demanding, competitive environment
* Experience editing video for TV and web -
* Must be available to work weekends, some holidays and extended daily hours when needed
