Social Media Editor
NBC New York is looking for an intelligent, passionate and highly motivated social media editor to create and manage the social media strategy for the local New York media group, which includes NBC 4 New York, New York Nonstop, NBCNewYork.com as well as other platforms including Path trains and NYC cabs. We cover essential New York City and tri-state news, culture, entertainment and information from the standpoint of a true insider and seek someone who can further the dialogue on Twitter, Facebook and other social media properties.
The full-time social media editor will oversee the social media strategy for our NBC owned and operated station, ensuring that our social media efforts are consistent, engaging and on-message. The social media editor must have excellent editing and writing skills and drive our social media strategy across all of platforms.
General Responsibilities:
Social Media Editor key responsibilities are:
Community Relations
* Start and moderate conversations across social media and in the online community
* Build and own relationships with the community.
* Work with our reporters and editors to develop strategies to use social media as a reporting tool
* Create and host events with the local social media community (i.e. bloggers, etc.)
Lead NBC New York’s Social Media Strategy and Effort
* Execute and contribute to the social media strategy for entire NBCNewYork local media group – including but not limited to TV news, sales and marketing
* Help develop and manage “The 20” social media franchise on air and online, including process to create easy integration into newscasts as needed.
* Help our staff to use social media in a conversational way to resonate with audiences
* Help our staff to use social media as a reporting tool
* Ensure the voice, tone and mix of content fits with the overall editorial strategy created by NBC Local Media
* Work with producers to include "The 20” in their shows
* Drive content to local blogs and other local media outlets/partners alongside content producers, web team and station talent
* Work with new social media contacts assigned to all content teams at the station
* Collect, monitor and distribute Social media metrics – develop best practices and action items from data
* Work with web team and content producers to upload video for the site based on need
* Innovate new and creative ways to use social media platforms to tell stories and have a dialogue with our viewers/readers.
Basic Qualifications:
* Minimum 2 years experience as an editor, writer or producer at a major news organization or blog that creates content under tight deadlines
* Bachelor’s degree, journalism, political science or English preferred
* A passion for social media. And a passion for talking to people
Desired Requirements:
* Exceptional communication skills
* Knowledge of digital media technology, particularly social media networks
* Proven journalism skills: strong storytelling; good news judgement
* Must have the desire to work in a creative, demanding, competitive environment
* Experience editing video for TV and web
* Must be available to work weekends and extended daily hours when needed
